How the mulch calculator works
Multiply the length and width (in feet) to find the area in square feet. Multiply by the mulch depth (in inches), then divide by 324 to convert to cubic yards.
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324
To calculate bags, convert cubic yards to cubic feet (multiply by 27), divide by the selected bag volume, and round up to the next whole bag.
Example
A 20 ft × 10 ft garden bed with a 3-inch mulch layer requires approximately 1.85 cubic yards, or 25 bags of 2 cubic feet each.
Important notes
Results are estimates for a rectangular area, without an added waste allowance. Actual needs can vary with ground conditions, settling, and product packaging. Confirm the recommended mulch depth for your plants before purchasing.
